Adding H5P content

H5P is an open format for interactive activities: crosswords, memory games, flashcards, interactive videos, branching scenarios and many others. In Beedeez, an H5P activity fills one card of a chapter, in the same way as a text or a video. You do not import a file: you build the activity inside Beedeez, in the H5P editor embedded in the back office. See Enriching your capsules with external content.

Building the activity in the H5P editor

There is no .h5p file to upload and no field where you would paste the address of an activity hosted elsewhere. The card carries the activity itself.

  1. Open the capsule you want to enrich, then open the chapter that will carry the activity.
  2. On the card, select the H5P Content type. The H5P editing screen opens.
  3. Click Create H5P content. The H5P editor opens in a window and lists the activity types available.
  4. Choose an activity type, then build the activity by following the instructions of the H5P editor.
  5. Save the activity. The message H5P content has been saved confirms the operation, and the button becomes Edit the H5P content.

The activity types on offer come from the public H5P library, whose list is refreshed every day. Beedeez neither restricts this list nor adds activity types of its own.

As long as no activity has been saved, the card stays empty and the content check on the capsule reports the H5P content of that card as missing.

How an H5P card plays for the learner

The activity is loaded over the network, inside a web view: an embedded frame on the web, an embedded web view on iOS and on Android. It is the same page in all three cases.

ℹ️ Good to know. H5P activities require an internet connection. They are never downloaded onto the device and cannot be played in offline mode, unlike a SCORM module imported into Beedeez. See Offline mode.

What an H5P activity reports

Beedeez does not collect what happens inside the activity. Answers are not stored, no score is recorded and no points are earned, even when the activity type keeps a score of its own. What the platform records is limited to the card having been reached.

That distinction matters for the two statuses the platform uses. An H5P card can help a capsule reach completed, since completion measures progress through the capsule. It contributes nothing to passed, which depends on the capsule’s Validation Mode. See What does each metric measure?.

💡 Advice: if the capsule has to be scored or passed, carry the assessment on a native quiz and keep H5P for practice.

H5P in the statistics

A capsule containing an H5P card behaves like any other on the capsule indicators: started, completed, time spent. Those indicators are computed for the whole capsule, not card by card.

H5P also appears in the Capsules content types widget, which counts how many contents of each type your capsules contain. That widget describes what you have authored, not what learners did.

No result-oriented statistic exists for an H5P card. Where a SCORM module feeds a score, a completion status and a success status, the equivalent columns stay empty for H5P. The two formats never convert into each other in either direction.

Translating an H5P card

The translation tab exposes an H5P content field, but it does not translate the activity. It lets you build a separate activity for each language, the way a document works. There is no automatic translation of an activity already created. See Translating your content.

Choosing when to use H5P

The editing screen carries this warning: “Warning, some H5P content may not be optimized for mobile devices. Please check the content before adding it to your capsule.” Activities driven by mouse drag and drop are the usual example. Open the capsule on a real phone, with a learner account, before you distribute it.

Since nothing comes back from an H5P activity, do not build assessment, mandatory training or certification on it. It suits practice and exploration, especially when you already have an H5P library or the skills to build one. For anything that has to be measured, the native formats cover the same ground.
