Common problems: skills

The framework is built in Content management, tab Skills; the figures are read in Statistics, tab Skills.

”I attached the skill and nobody is progressing”

The points counter in the Associated skills block starts at 0, and it stays there until you touch it. A capsule attached at 0 points advances no theoretical level, however many learners complete it.

Go back over each line and give it points. The counter accepts 0 to 100 points per attachment. The default thresholds ask for 1 point to reach level 1, then 3, 6, 10 and 15. They are set skill by skill, in the Theoretical points tab of the Edit skill window.

⚠️ Worse than nothing: a learner who completes a capsule attached at 0 points is recorded at the bottom level, enters the Average theoretical level and drags it down.

ℹ️ The capsule editor shows a notice below that block saying the attachment has no effect yet. That message is out of date, the points are counted. See Attaching skills to content.

”I attached the skill afterwards and nothing moved”

There is no retroactive pass. Points are granted at the moment a learner completes the content. Anyone who completed it before the attachment gets nothing, ever. Likewise, changing a capsule’s points value or a skill’s thresholds does not recompute levels already recorded: they stay as they are until the next completion carrying that skill.

💡 Attach before you distribute. On content already consumed, only a newly attached capsule will start the counters again.

”My three average levels disagree”

That is expected. Average level, Average theoretical level and Average manager level come from three different sources and do not cover the same learners: each counts only those who hold the matching value. No shared denominator, so nothing to add up or average across those columns. On top of that, the rounding is not the same everywhere.

Two more surprises on the same page: the date filter moves Average level only, and the Coaches tab ignores the period as well as departments. The column-by-column detail is in Skills and coaches.

”The skill-based certificate was not issued”

A team leader’s score awards no certificate. It feeds the Average manager level and nothing else. Only a coach assessing a milestone produces the level that certificates read. The theoretical level does not trigger them either.

Creating a certificate awards it to nobody retroactively. The condition is checked when a milestone is assessed and when the learner is active on a capsule. A learner already at the required level will get it on their next activity, and the document will carry that later date. See The skill-based certificate.

”Competent sits below Apprentice”

That is indeed the scale as shipped: Not Acquired, Novice, Competent, Apprentice, Proficient, Expert, from rank 0 to rank 5. A coach picking “Competent” is giving a lower rank than “Apprentice”. Rename the scale before the first milestones: the six ranks are fixed, only names and descriptions can be changed, and a rename propagates immediately to every past assessment. See Mastery levels.

”I cannot find how to delete a skill”

A skill cannot be deleted. The button in the edit window is Deactivate skill: the skill disappears from the pickers and from the learning platform, but levels already awarded remain. To reverse it, use Show deactivated skills, then Activate. ⚠️ Deactivating a group does not deactivate the skills inside it.

”I cannot create a skill, or see the analytics tab”

Two separate rights families, and neither follows the rights over capsules. Editing the framework depends on Create skills and Update skills. A trainer who creates capsules does not necessarily hold the right to touch the framework. See Assigning rights.

The analytics tab depends on Skills Statistics, which carries four values, from No skills statistics through to full access. See Who sees which analytics.
