Capsule ratings

⚠️ Required rights: access to statistics to view the ratings, and capsule editing rights to turn the feature on or off.

At the end of a capsule, learners can give it a rating from 1 to 5 stars. This article explains how rating works, where to find the results and why some averages can differ.

To see the other types of feedback available, read Collecting feedback.

What the learner sees

At the end of a capsule, the question Did you enjoy the capsule? appears. The learner can then give a rating from 1 to 5 stars.

  • For a standard capsule, this screen appears after the validation screen.
  • For an adaptive capsule, it is the end-of-capsule screen, because no validation screen is displayed.

The learner only needs to select a star to send their rating: no confirmation button is required. Only whole ratings from 1 to 5 are available. The learner cannot give half a star or add a comment, and rating remains optional.

The rating given previously is not displayed. The learner can therefore change their rating by giving a new one; only their latest rating is taken into account in the statistics.

A learner therefore counts only once per capsule, even if they rated it several times.

Learners can also see the capsule’s average rating on its page and on some tiles. It is shown as a star, followed by the average and the number of ratings received. This information only appears once the first rating has been given, and it is not shown on the tiles of a capsule included in a track.

Turning capsule rating on or off

From the capsule editor:

  1. Open the Evaluation tab in the left menu.
  2. Scroll down to the End-of-capsule display section.
  3. Turn the Show rating (stars) button on or off.

This option is on by default. It applies to each capsule individually: no global setting is available at account level. The Evaluation tab is not available for training interest capsules.

⚠️ Enabling the hot questionnaire turns off the rating and the public comment. If you then turn this questionnaire off, these options are not turned back on automatically. To collect new ratings, turn Show rating (stars) back on manually.

⚠️ For adaptive capsules, the Show rating (stars) and Show public comment settings are not taken into account: the end screen always displays the stars and the public comment.

Where to find ratings in the statistics

ScreenColumn
Statistics > Content > CapsulesScore and Score - current period, displayed by default; Number of ratings and Number of ratings - current period, to add
Capsule detail, learners tabRating, to add: this learner’s rating, from 1 to 5
Capsule detail, groups tabAvg. rating, to add: the average among the group’s learners who rated the capsule
Statistics > Learners / GroupsAverage rating, to add: the average of the ratings this learner gave
Statistics > Content > TracksAverage rating (number of ratings), displayed by default

In Statistics > Content > Capsules, the score columns show the average, followed by a star and the number of ratings, for example: 4.5 ⭐ (57). Always check the number of ratings to interpret the average.

All these columns can be sorted. The An overview export also contains:

  • the average score, shown as ”-” when no rating has been given;
  • the number of learners who rated the capsule. To learn more, read Exports and reporting.

💡 The Score cell is clickable. It opens the Rating details window, which lists the ratings learner by learner, with the columns Learner, Rating and Rating date. You will also find the number of ratings, the average, a search field and an XLSX export. If no rating has been given, the window displays a message saying so.

Understanding the columns with or without a period

ColumnInterpretation
Score - current periodonly takes into account the ratings given during the period selected in the filters
Scoretakes into account all the ratings given since the capsule was created, whatever the period

⚠️ If the Include disabled learners option is not turned on, the ratings of these learners are excluded from both columns.

In both cases, the platform keeps the latest rating given by each learner, then calculates the average. No minimum number of ratings is required and the average is rounded to one decimal place.

When you open Rating details, the data displayed matches the scope of the selected column.

Why three averages can differ

Several averages are available in the platform, but they are not calculated in the same way.

The capsule average only takes into account the latest rating given by each learner. A learner therefore counts as a single rating.

The Average rating displayed for a learner takes into account all the ratings they gave, without removing duplicates. If they rated the same capsule twice, that capsule counts twice in their average.

The average that learners see on a capsule page or on some tiles is based on all the ratings received since the capsule was created, including those of disabled learners. It does not take group or department filters into account.

All these averages are correct: they simply answer different needs.

What rating does not do

Ratings are not saved offline. If a learner gives a rating without an internet connection, it is neither queued nor saved, even if the stars appear selected on screen.

No minimum number of ratings applies in the statistics. A capsule that received a single rating can therefore display a high average, just like a capsule that received several hundred ratings. Always check the number of ratings displayed next to the score.

Finally, rating does not collect a comment or a detailed evaluation. The public comment is a separate feature, which requires turning on the forum from the capsule settings. Hot and cold evaluations rely on separate questionnaires.
