Create a capsule from scratch

Creating a capsule from scratch means starting with an empty capsule and building its content notion by notion. This gives you full control over the content and lets you start with a blank page.

Required permissions:

Under Content editing, you need one of the following permissions:

  • Create and edit all capsules
  • Create and edit own capsules
  • Create capsules requiring validation

With the last permission, you can create a capsule in the same way, but its publication must then be approved by a reviewer. See Have a capsule validated before publication.

If you already have content to turn into a capsule, you can also Generate a capsule with AI or Generate a capsule from a PDF.

Start creating your capsule

In the Create a training modal, select Training capsule.

In the How would you like to start? panel, choose Create from scratch, then click Start creating.

You can then enter the capsule information across two screens.

On the first screen, enter:

  • the image
  • the Capsule title
  • the Capsule description
  • the Learning objective

On the second screen, enter:

  • the Language
  • the Categories
  • the Skills
  • the Capsule level

Click Create capsule to open the editor.

⚠️ Only the title is required to move to the second screen. If it is empty, the button remains disabled and displays “Title is required”. The other information can be completed directly in the editor.

💡 Tip: add an image to your capsule. If no image is defined, the image from the first notion is used when the capsule is opened by a learner.

Add notions

Once in the editor, start building your capsule with Create my first notion.

Each notion can contain:

  • a title
  • a description
  • content
  • a quiz

The Add content and Add a card buttons let you add content to the notion. You can also place a Quiz before content or Quiz after content.

For an overview of the available formats, see Activity formats.

You can then add more notions:

  • Add a notion creates a new empty notion
  • Import a notion lets you reuse a notion from another capsule

Save or publish the capsule

A capsule can be saved even if it is still incomplete.

The Save and close and Save and continue buttons let you save your work.

The Publish capsule button appears in the Save and publish panel only when there are no warnings or blocking errors.

Errors that prevent publication

Several elements can prevent a capsule from being published. For example:

  • “The capsule title is empty”
  • “The capsule description is empty”
  • “The capsule is not in any category”
  • “The capsule is not in any learning path”
  • “The capsule has no notion defined”, when the validation mode is based on selected notions.

Each notion can also have its own errors. For example, an empty notion displays “The notion contains neither content nor quiz”.

The Save and publish panel lists all these errors. Fix them until none remain.

⚠️ An “Online” capsule containing an error can no longer be saved. The save buttons are disabled. To make changes, you must first unpublish the capsule, fix the issue, then publish it again.

Plan these elements from the start

Destination

To be published, a capsule must be accessible to learners. It must therefore be associated with a learning path, the catalogue of a scope, or a custom distribution rule using groups.

The Select learning paths section lets you define this destination quickly.

See Associate a capsule with learning paths.

Categories

A capsule must be associated with at least one category. Categories help learners find and organize content in the app.

See Categories.

Language

The language selected when creating the capsule becomes its original language. Translations can then be added from this language.

See Translate your content.

You are not limited by duration

There is no required duration or maximum number of notions. You can create a short capsule with a few notions or a more complete e-learning course.

💡 Tip: for your first capsule, starting with a short piece of content can make it easier to build, test and refine.

You can work with others

The editor is collaborative, so several people can work on the same capsule.

Editing is managed notion by notion to prevent several people from modifying the same content at the same time.

See Reuse content and work together.

Title and description: watch the length

The title and description are among the first pieces of information learners see in capsule lists.

When entering them, a character counter shows the remaining number of characters:

  • 67 characters for the title
  • 300 characters for the description

The description field also recommends 300 characters.

The Save and publish panel applies different recommendations:

  • a title longer than 60 characters generates a warning
  • a description longer than 300 characters generates a warning
  • a description shorter than 50 characters also generates a warning

These warnings do not prevent publication. They simply indicate that the content may be less readable in the app.

💡 Tip: use a short title and a description that clearly explains the purpose of the capsule. Two useful sentences are generally more effective than a long text that may be truncated when displayed.
